A Simple DIY Advent Calendar

This simple DIY advent calendar is the perfect minimalist touch to your holiday decor plus it’s a hit with the kids!

Taking me under an hour and less then $8, I am very happy with the outcome.  Our advent calendar fits perfectly within the theme of our holiday home decor this year.

  • envelopes – I used kraft envelopes that I had around the house
  • baker’s twine or any string you have
  • chalk crayon – I bought mine from Michaels with a 50% coupon which came to $5 for a pack of two
  • tree clippings from your Christmas tree or wherever you can find some
  • gold metal form or a large stick – I was originally going to find a stick in our forest but when I came across this gold metal form for only $2 at our local dollar store I knew it would be perfect!
  • floral wire (or string) – to secure tree clippings to form
  • scissors
  • Christmas candies (optional)
  • 25 days of Christmas printable

step one

I downloaded my 25 days of Christmas printable here or you can write you own.  I wrote numbers 1-25 on the envelopes and stuffed them with each activity.  I also added a little treat for each day.

step two

I wrapped the string around each envelope as if I were tying a present, tying off at the top end of the envelope so it hangs nicely leaving extra string to tie to my advent wreath.  I left about 12 inches for each envelope.

step three

Before we attached the envelopes to the wreath I needed to create the wreath simply by wrapping the tree cuttings onto the metal form with floral wire (or string if you don’t have any wire) – Adding as much or little as you’d like.  I went for a half wreath since I wanted some of the gold to show.

step four

Attach the envelopes to the wreath with the remaining string.  I was able to attach the envelopes within the back of my wreath by wrapping the string around the exposed floral wire.

step five

Hang and enjoy your 25 days of Christmas!
